Al Franken is now a U.S. Senator

Minn. rules for Franken in Senate fight
AP

By BRIAN BAKST, Associated Press Writer Brian Bakst, Associated Press Writer – 30 mins ago

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Supreme Court has ordered that Democrat Al Franken be certified as the winner of the state's long-running Senate race.

The high court rejected a legal challenge from Republican Norm Coleman, whose options for regaining the Senate seat are dwindling.

Justices said Franken is entitled to the election certificate he needs to assume office. With Franken and the usual backing of two independents, Democrats will have a big enough majority to overcome Republican filibuster.

Coleman hasn't ruled out seeking federal court intervention.

Quick update

Sorry if I hadn't posted in a while, but these three news bits will compensate for lost time.

Jimmy Fallon receives college degree.

Fallon gets degree

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - He's a comic, actor, "Saturday Night Live" veteran and "Late Night" talk show host.

Add one more thing to Jimmy Fallon's resume: College graduate.

The 34-year-old Fallon has finally gotten his bachelor's degree, 14 years after he left an upstate New York college to pursue his comedy career.

The television and film star picked up his degree in communications and spoke to graduates at Saturday's College of Saint Rose commencement.

Fallon was a Saint Rose student from 1992 through 1995, when he left the Albany college to pursue a show business career. He was just one semester short of graduating.

Andy Samberg to host SNL shorts special

Samberg to host 'SNL' special

By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer

Sometimes the memorable moments on ``Saturday Night Live' aren't live. From Mr. Bill to ``Lazy Sunday,'' the late-night show has occasionally presented short films, and is collecting many of the best for a two-hour prime-time special airing May 17 at 9 p.m. Andy Samberg is the host.

For a program that has sliced and diced material for all manner of prime-time compilations, it's the first time one is being devoted specifically to the short films.

``It's great to be able to show all these great ones from the past to a generation that is not familiar with them,'' Samberg said. ``For me to do hosting segments and be able to (introduce) `Synchronized Swimmers,' this is not just something that influenced me heavily but influenced everybody in comedy.''

That film featuring Martin Short's water acrobatics was directed by Christopher Guest.

Samberg also remembers Eddie Murphy's short film, ``White Like Me,'' where the actor impersonated a white man.

``When I was a kid and saw that, my brain exploded,'' Samberg said. ``It was like the greatest thing I'd ever seen in my life.''

Robert Smigel's ``TV Funhouse'' was a frequent ``SNL'' feature, and the 2007 film featuring Justin Timberlake and a gift box won an Emmy Award.

But the granddaddy of ``SNL'' films featured Mr. Bill, a clay figure given a high-pitched voice and a tendency to meet untimely ends. Samberg, in his fourth season at ``SNL,'' may be better known for his work on short films than live skits. ``Lazy Sunday,'' a rap video about cupcakes and movies on an otherwise boring afternoon, became a sensation on the Internet and was key to the early success of YouTube.

Samberg has created several other films with partners Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, including a rap song with Natalie Portman and ``Iran So Far Away,'' a tribute to Iranian President Mahmoud Amadinejad.

Samberg, Taccone and Schaffer were active posting comic videos on the Internet before joining ``Saturday Night Live.'' That wasn't the work that got them a job on ``SNL,'' however. Samberg said the show's staff noticed him when he wrote for an MTV awards show that was hosted by Jimmy Fallon.

Now Samberg is hosting MTV's Movie Awards after the ``Saturday Night Live'' season ends.

Live or taped? Samberg said he doesn't have a personal preference when he's working on the show.

``It depends on the material,'' he said. ``I've had some of the most fun of my time here live in the studio. When something is really working in there and you're feeling the audience's energy and playing off each other, that can be kind of electric.''

Maya Rudolph expecting second child with filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson

`SNL' alum Maya Rudolph expecting her second child

Tue May 12, 5:23 pm ET

NEW YORK – Maya Rudolph say she's expecting her second child with filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.

The former "Saturday Night Live" star confirmed her pregnancy Tuesday on ABC's "The View." When co-host Barbara Walters asked whether she was expecting, Rudolph answered: "I am. ... I'm so excited."

The 36-year-old actress and 38-year-old Anderson, who has directed such films as "Magnolia" and "There Will Be Blood," are already parents to a 3-year-old daughter.

Rudolph left "SNL" in 2007 but has since returned to the NBC show to portray Michelle Obama.

In the upcoming film "Away We Go," she plays a woman expecting her first child. John Krasinski plays her partner in the Sam Mendes movie. It's slated for limited release on June 5.

A Zac Efron foot fetish skit gets the boot before it aired!

And for good reason.

Something is afoot at Saturday Night Live, but, despite the conspiracy theorists, we're pretty sure it isn't because Zac Efron's toes are too hot for television.

The 17 Again star's hosting stint last weekend concluded with a skit involving him getting a sensual foot massage. The clip, however, is not available for viewing on NBC.com or Hulu.com and has been eliminated from the for-purchase run-through of the show on iTunes.

SNL player Jason Sudeikis stars in the segment as Efron's older brother, to whom Mr. HSM goes for romantic advice. Sudeikis' character recommends a foot massage and proceeds to show him how it's done...complete with a little toe suckage.

Some are suggesting that the sketch may have been pulled because people opposed the footloose fetishism that could be implied by those with dirty minds. However, a source close to SNL tells E! News the reason the clip is MIA is because of music licensing issues and not some sort of Efron image maintenance. The skit features the songs "Monkey Wrench" by the Foo Fighters and "Always and Forever" by Luther Vandross.

A source close to the star concurs that the omission has nothing to do with NBC being in hot water and "is not a big deal."

To paraphrase Sophie Simmons, "I hate feet."

EDIT: Open mouth, insert foot.

Here's the frackin' transcript courtesy of SNL Transcripts.

Ladies and Gentlemen! The one, the only: G.E. SMITH!!

Former 'SNL' band leader back to his jam band roots.

Former ‘SNL’ band leader back to his jam band roots

By BILL DEYOUNG

“We start in the bars; we end in the bars,” G.E. Smith tells me, quoting his friend and fellow guitar legend Jorma Kaukonen. “The only difference is where you go in the middle.” Smith is the lead guitarist for the band Moonalice, appearing Thursday at Live Wire Music Hall. Twenty years ago, he was touring the world as Bob Dylan’s musical director (they once did a single show for 600,000 people).

Before that, he’d played the planet’s biggest rooms — and Live Aid — during his seven years with Daryl Hall & John Oates. And from 1985 to ‘95, Smith was the bandleader on “Saturday Night Live” — square-jawed, blond hair, ponytail ... see him in your memory? Yep, that’s the guy. The 57-year-old Pennsylvania native was a professional guitarist — and yes, playing in bars — by age 11.

So he’s done pretty much all there is for a musician to do. He just loves to play, and he doesn’t really care where. “What’s the ultimate goal for me when I go out of my house and go to play for people?” Smith said. “It’s to try to communicate something … to get some emotions over. To have a good time, so what’s the difference if it’s five or 50,000? You’re going for the same thing.” Moonalice has a most impressive pedigree.

The bassist is Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jack Casady (he was an original member of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, both with Jorma Kaukonen); on keyboards is Pete Sears, a British session player who spent a decade with Jefferson Starship (and was in Hot Tuna, too). Steel guitarist Barry Sless plays with the legendary Phil Lesh & Friends; drummer Jimmy Sanchez, singer/guitarist Roger McAmee and lead singer Ann McNamee came from San Francisco’s great “retro” rock band, the Flying Other Brothers.

With those credentials, Moonalice has become a draw on the jam band circuit — hey, Thursday they’re opening for Grand Jam- Daddy Col. Bruce Hampton—but Smith maintains that Moonalice is more about the songs than just noodling and grooving (not that there’s anything wrong with that). “To me, the jam band thing comes out of the Grateful Dead, through Phish, and Widespread and that,” he said.

“There are certainly elements of that in this band — but I wouldn’t say that we are strictly a jam band. Although we do have some songs that are 15 minutes long — if we cut them down.” Moonalice’s self-titled debut album — which will be in stores shortly — was produced by TBone Burnett, who won a round of Grammys this month for his (strictly song-oriented) work with Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Most of the songs on the CD were written by the band members, although they’re famous for playing oddball covers (Steely Dan’s “Showbiz Kids,” anyone?) at the drop of a hat.

The only “non-permanent” band member is Casady, who misses about half of Moonalice’s dates because he’s off working Hot Tuna gigs with Kaukonen. All six of the others, Smith included, switch off on bass when Casady’s not on the stage. Smith sees himself as the band member who keeps everyone musically focused — he’s an arranger, an orchestrator and, most of all, a guy who knows how to make things happen.

“I don’t necessarily want people to be mystified when they’re standing there, going ‘What are they doing?’ There’s bands that do that, and it’s really cool, but my training — or whatever — is to be an entertainer, I guess.”

What does G.E. Smith — a man who’s been there, done that and lived to talk about it — want from the Moonalice experience? He certainly doesn’t need the money or the recognition. “Iwanttoplay—it’swhatIdo,”he said with a laugh. “It’s too late to stop now. I want to play in front of people, andIwantthebandtobegood.”

Wii Masturbation (not for everyone, folks)

IMO, on the latter, I've played a little bit of 'Wario Land: Shake It!' at my local GameStop. It's a pretty good game, even though I've never played a Wario title before, but if you're going to purhcase or rent the game, I'd suggest investing in a strategy guide beforehand.

NOW I feel old

Check out Abby Elliott's bio from Wikipedia:

San Fancisco Gate reviews DVD debut of "Mr. Mike's Mondo Video"

Mr. Mike is Michael O'Donoghue, one of the more extreme figures of the '70s comedy movement that produced the National Lampoon and "Saturday Night Live." Anyone who remembers the darker and more bitter strain of the Lampoon's satire knows what O'Donoghue was all about. His comic style ran from outrageous to way beyond the pale, and he had such a combustible personality that he terrified some performers at "SNL," where he was the show's first head writer. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage at 54. This show was supposed to be an NBC special, but the network found it too uninhibited, and it was never aired. It largely vanished after a quick theatrical release. The program alternates the kind of raunchy material that scared NBC with gonzo absurdism and in-your-face naughtiness, such as the "Cat Swimming School" skit. Early "SNL" cast members appear - Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin and Laraine Newman - along with guests such as Carrie Fisher, Margot Kidder and Sid Vicious. (Vicious is seen singing "My Way," but the sound is blocked because of copyright issues.) Among the bonus features are some "SNL" excerpts, Murray's 1994 eulogy of O'Donoghue and a selection of "Mr. Mike's Least-Loved Bedtime Tales" from the show's second season.
